Abergavenny Officers Clamp Down on Illegal Parking

Cause an obstruction by parking illegally and face a fine and points on your licence warns Gwent Police.

Illegal parking on double yellow lines and hazard warning lines on Mill and Cross Street has increasingly become a problem which Abergavenny Officers have to deal with.

The problem is made worse as many cars stop to collect takeaways from the many venues on the Abergavenny streets.

Officers have tried various ways of solving this issue. They have spoken to drivers and moved them on to the many car parks in the Town.

More recently, signs have been put up on the lampposts in the streets to warn drivers of the dangers of parking illegally and also the potential implications for them if they are found parking in prohibited areas.

The police are also working with the takeaways and shops on Mill and Cross Street and leaflets have been displayed in the shop windows and given out to customers.

Unfortunately, these tactics have not worked and enforcement days have now been planned by the policing teams. This means that any cars parked illegally will be issued with either a £30 or £60 fine and will also face points on their driving licence.

Inspector Mike Boycott explained, ‘Illegal and inconsiderate parking can seriously affect the quality of life of the community and we are responding to calls from the community to take action. Illegally parked vehicles not only cause congestion and delays but are a serious road safety hazard. Robust enforcement has become necessary after warnings and advice to motorists has been largely ignored. It is our intention to target those few selfish drivers who continue to break the law.’
