Council gives boost to local food

DSC_7856-Mirain-yn-cyflwynoAs part of Llwyddo yng Ngwynedd initiative, five local cafes are taking part in a pilot scheme during December aimed at encouraging more customers to eat Welsh dishes cooked with Gwynedd produce.

Caban, Brynrefail; Antur Waunfawr; Oriel Glyn y Weddw, Llanbedrog; Canolfan Cywain, Y Bala; and Y Sospan, Dolgellau will be offering vouchers worth £5 +VAT to be exchanged for any dish on the specially designed Gwynedd Menu.

Each menu will reflect the character of the individual café but will contain dishes cooked using Gwynedd produce.

One thousand vouchers will be distributed in various locations in order to target visitors specifically e.g. tourist information centers, attractions, galleries and shops. The vouchers can be exchanged until December 20.

This pilot scheme follows the one conducted in July when over 300 ‘Llyn Breakfast’ packs were distributed to campsites and self-catering accommodation in the Abersoch area.

Everything in the packs came from producers within 10 miles of the village.

“The visitors were delighted with the packs,’” said Mirain Gwyn, Gwynedd’s Offer Co-ordinator,  “and we decided to build on this success by developing and strengthening the link between the producers and the cafes to begin with and between producers and shops in the near future.”

The cafes have all been working with food consultant and cook Nerys Howell in order to research and create menus which use Gwynedd produce and reflect all that is best in the county’s food.

“The scheme requires the cafes to serve Welsh dishes or at least a version of a local recipe. Chicken Jalfrezi won’t count even if the chicken has been reared in the shadow of Snowdon!” said Mirain.

This scheme is part of the Llwyddo yng Ngwynedd initiative which is the name of the Welsh Rural Development Scheme in Gwynedd which is lead by the Gwynedd Economic Partnership (PEG).

Llwyddo yng Ngwynedd is sponsored by the European Fund for Rural Development, the Welsh Assembly Government and Gwynedd Council.
