The Den at Rookwood Hospital has received a long overdue make-over thanks to a kind patient and his colleagues.

Steve Morrison was employed as Health and Safety Manager for Uplands Retail Construction when he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease just over 2 years ago.

Steve regularly visits Rookwood Hospital to discuss his care and for treatment of his condition. The Den is regularly used for his multi agency meetings. During these visits, Steve noticed how worn out and shabby the room looked – grubby walls, stained carpet, sagging furniture and a pool table that had orange bags for pockets were just some of the issues he noticed. There was also no TV in the patient room as someone had stolen it the previous year.

Steve set about his plan to renovate the room. By utilising the great relationships with his colleagues at Uplands Construction and calling in a few favours from his friends, Steve managed to get a DIYSOS style project underway to redecorate the Den.

Steve contacted Kevin Feldman, Managing Director of Uplands Retail Construction and explained that he was having treatment at Rookwood Hospital and The Den was looking a little sorry for itself, and they agreed to pull a team together to help out.

Each year Uplands help worthwhile causes through charitable donations and participation, and they were pleased to be able to help Steve out and agreed to refurbish not only the Den but surrounding areas too.

Kevin said: “Assisting Steve on this project was one of the easiest decisions we’ve made as a business in a long while, it’s been a pleasure to be involved, and deserves all the support we could offer.”

Steve said: “I would like to thank Uplands for completing the refurbishment of The Den at Rookwood. I am certain that the patients, their families and the staff will agree that it is now a much nicer environment for people to attend clinics at and for staff to work in.”

Steve is kindly donating a new TV for The Den as a mark of gratitude for the treatment he has received during his time there.

Andrea Richards, Directorate Manager for Neurosciences at Cardiff and Vale UHB said: ““I’d like to thank Steve and everyone involved for the team effort in refurbishing The Den. The new furniture and equipment will make a huge difference to the patients that use it.”

So with The Den receiving a new layout, a fresh coat of paint, new signage, new flooring, new sofas, new chairs, a new TV and a new pool table – patients and their families will soon be flocking to use the shiny new revitalised facility.

Adam Hurlin, Contracts Manager for Uplands Construction who project managed the refurbishment of The Den said: “It was great to be involved in managing this project as I have worked closely with Steve during his time with Uplands, so when the opportunity arose I was happy to help. It’s good to get involved with a project that will make a positive change to people for years to come.”

Many of Uplands Retail Construction suppliers from all over the UK have kindly helped out with this DIY SOS style project., namely: Alldec Northern Ltd, Red Lay Flooring Ltd, Forbo Flooring UK LTD, HSS Hire, Environmental Essentials, Abacus Skip Hire & Waste management and Instant Signs.
