Healthy Heart

People from across Pembrokeshire who have suffered heart problems have helped to launch a Healthy Heart initiative in the County.

Heart disease accounts for almost one in two deaths and is the leading cause of premature death in both men and women in the UK.

Funded by the Big Lottery Fund, the money has been used to train six fitness instructors and appoint a specialist nurse.

Working together, they will provide rehabilitation care for people with heart disease, looking after their physical and psychological well being.

The Healthy Heart initiative is operated by a partnership comprising the Pembrokeshire and Derwen NHS Trust, Pembrokeshire County Council and the Pembrokeshire Local Health Board.

To launch the programme, around 80 former heart patients walked two laps of the track at Haverfordwest Leisure Centre last week.

They were accompanied by Council Chairman Clive Collins; his counterpart in the Trust, Lynette George and the Vice Chairman of the Health Board, David Wildman.
