The Amman Valley Railway is a heritage railway project in the Amman Valley, near Llanelli in west Wales. The line that the project is based on is one of a number of lines, some of which carried passengers at one point, but many of which were more or less just colliery branch lines, serving the various collieries of the area between Swansea and Llanelli.
The Amman Valley project is aiming to help bring tourists and trade to the valley, one of the many areas that suffered after the collapse of most heavy industry in South Wales, and in many ways differs from that of most other volunteer run railways.
Not much news has been heard from the group in recent months, but they have been hoping to start running trains on a small section of track as soon as possible was the most recent news to be heard from them.
They are hoping to be able to give train rides behind steam locomotives, and are planning to buy three tank engines of a common, popular build from Poland, almost all of which have been sold to the highest bidder since they were put out of railway use in the 1990s. They are similar in many ways to the Great Western Pannier tank locomotive.
In mid-2006, a Class 103 diesel multiple unit vehicle was purchased for restoration and eventual use on the line. |
