| Mike Young Michael Young (born 1956 in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan), is a Welsh born US Citizen Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning television producer, and the co-founder of the animation studios Kalato Ltd and Mike Young Productions.
[edit] Biography Young trained as a television producer, but while working as an advertising copywriter he met partner Liz Young. After the pair married in the 1970's, his step son Richard Finn (now head of post-production at MYP), was having trouble falling asleep. Young invented stories about a teddy bear, which became SuperTed. Finn went to school to tell his friends the wonderful stories, which resulted in the SuperTed books, co-produced with TV Producer Young.
The couple were approached by the new Welsh based television channel S4C to turn the books into an animated TV series, over voiced in Welsh. Setting up Pentrych based Siriol Animation to deliver the show (Siriol is Welsh for 'cheerful'), Young and his wife partnered with animator Dave Edwards and producer Robin Lyons. The series went down so well it was re-dubbed in English, Siriol produced three series of SuperTed, and made a special edition for the Welsh Office which instructed children on the "dos" and "don'ts" of road safety. The series sold well in the UK, and together with the larger developed series of Fantastic Max, The Further Adventures of SuperTed and Little Dracula.
Developing their portfolio, Young found it difficult to sell series to Hollywood executives who expect him to be just along the road. In 1989 the family moved to Los Angeles, selling their right to Super Ted and shares owned in Siriol Animation to finance the move. Mike and Liz set up Mike Young Productions, which in its first year of production produced The Little Engine That Could, a short film that ran before Universal Studios 1991 animated feature An American Tail: Fievel Goes West.
Personal life Young is married to partner, president and the other co-founder of Mike Young Productions, Liz Young. A football fanatic, he is a lifelong supporter of Cardiff City FC, and runs a junior soccer league in California. Young was awarded the Chancellor's Medal at the 2007 graduation ceremony of the University of Glamorgan.
