Pontprennau is a district of the city of Cardiff, Wales. The district lies to the west of the River Rhymney and is therefore in the traditional county of Glamorgan.

History
Pontprennau translates from the Welsh language as "Bridge of Trees" (can also translate as "wooden bridges" or "footbridges"). The land was once a single farm, designated in the 1970s for domestic development, and since development began in the mid 1990s, it has become a leafy (but relatively dense) suburb of private sector low-rise housing.

Today
Pontprennau has a population that probably now exceeds 10,000 people (8,037 from Census data, 2001) due to sustained housebuilding in the district, which is likely to continue for the next 10 years as a major urban expansion of up to 4,000 homes is constructed.

At the entrance closest to the M4 motorway, there is a local shopping park with free car parking, serviced by a large Asda superstore and having other shops including B&Q, DFS and ScS. At the other end of the Pontprennau development, there is an Aldi supermarket the Cyncoed Medical Centre. The only public house, The Village Inn, operates from the central Pontprennau area, adjacent to the Jaguar garage.

Transport
Pontprennau is located next to Junction 30 of the M4 motorway, where Cardiff Gate motorway services and Business Park is located.

Cardiff Bus serve Pontprennau via services 57 and 58. A full timetable can be found on Cardiff Buses wesbite, but services runs approximately every 9mins (Monday to Friday) via each stop, and will arrive in Cardiff in around 40mins. Pontprennau is in Zone4 of the Cardiff Bus system, with single adult fares to Cardiff costing �1.60, and a return (Day Rover ticket) �3.00

Community Centre
The community centre houses a children's playgroup (Supertots Playgroup), and it is used by local political representatives for Surgeries.

Church
The church has suite of meeting rooms, a coffee shop, and a lounge. The coffee shop (PCs) is open every week day from 10.00 to 14.00.

Library
There is no library at present located in Pontprennau, but a mobile library service visits once a week

School
There are presently no schools in Pontprennau. This is due to Cardiff Council continuing its local debate due to both the need for capital investment in a school in Pontprennau, and the need to rationalise other schools in the Cardiff district which are unfilled or require large capital investment. A local primary school had been promised for September 2007 (claimed as a "victory" independently by both Local Councillors), but again the council may move the date and not fulfill its promise as the council have failed to reach an agreement on the closure of several schools in the rest of the city.

Sports
Pontprennau Community Centre playing fields (allocated to the school, but open for community use) provides one of many "green-grass-expanse" family activity areas within the community, as well as a standard sized footabll field. The field is the home of the "Pontprennau Pumas" the local football team, running teams in both the local Under16's and Adult league, and sponsored by Cardiff Gate Business Park. Contact with the Pumas can be made via Councillor Phillips, the club secretary.

Commercial activity
The area is home to many businesses, however some have now relocated to make way for further housing developments. Firms such as Panasonic, Boots, First Bank, HBOS, IB, Swalec and 118118 have offices in Pontprennau. The industrial estate in Pontprennau south once housed warehouses for Marks and Spencer, Great Mills and Panasonic. Stratstone still presently have a Jaguar cars showroom on the south estate. The Bupa hospital Cardiff is located on the south estate, which was expanded in 2007; and the Cardiff emergency service control centre recently set up it's headquarters at the adjacent business park.

Representation
Pontprennau & Old St. Mellons is an electoral division located in the North East of Cardiff. It is represented by Jane Rogers and Dianne Rees, both of the Conservative Party

Government
National Assembly
Pontprennau is in the Cardiff North constituency for the National Assembly for Wales, currently represented by Sue Essex AM, a member of the Labour Party, and Welsh Assembly Minister for Finance, Government and Local Services.

Westminster
Cardiff North is currently represented by Julie Morgan MP a member of the Labour Party. She is married to the First Minister of Wales, Rhodri Morgan, and actively maintains a weblog.
