Llay woman pleads guilty to dishonestly claiming £35,000 in benefits

Sarah Tyler, of  Llay, Wrexham pleaded guilty in Mold Crown Court of dishonestly claiming Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit and Income Support. This was a joint investigation with Wrexham County Borough Council and the Department of Works & Pensions.

Ms Tyler failed to declare that she had a partner living with her between February 2006 and November 2008. As a result Ms Tyler was overpaid £35,000 in benefits as she failed to declare her partner lived with her and was in full time employment.

Judge Mr Keiser QC imposed a custodial sentence of 3 months suspended for 12 months subject to 3 conditions. The first condition is that she must not commit any criminal offence; the second condition is that she must keep in contact with her officer attached to the case and the third condition is that she must attend 14 sessions at the Future Skills programme. Ms Tyler must also repay all of the overpaid benefit.
