Local firm wins Gwyn Evans contract

Local firm Maelor Construction has won the contract to refurbish and improve Gwyn Evans Leisure & Activity Centre in Gwersyllt, Wrexham.

The centre is undergoing a £750,000 refurbishment and will close for 9 months while the work is carried out. The project is supported by the Sports Council for Wales.

Worked started on the centre in January and the planned improvements include a new first floor facility encompassing a brand new Technogym Gym fitness suite with disabled access, as well as extra storage and office space.

The swimming pool hall is also being extended to provide an improved spectator area. The foyer, reception and seating area of the foyer are all also being extended and refurbished, providing a new entrance and exit to the centre including ramped access.

There will be a variety of tradesmen working on the refurbishment, with Maelor Construction increasing its workforce by 20% to undertake the work.

Councillor Bob Dutton, Lead Member for Communities and Performance, said: “We are committed to this programme of investment in our leisure Centres because the promotion of healthier lifestyles through participation in sport and leisure activities, such as our Free Swimming indicatives, remains a priority in Wrexham. It is always good to see local companies competing for and winning important public sector contracts like this at Gwyn Evans”.

Councillor Rodney Skelland, Lead Member for Regeneration and Corporate Governance, said: “This is an exciting project and I’m extremely pleased that a local firm has won the contract in these testing times for the economy.

“Maelor Construction was awarded the work because it was the most cost effective, had expertise in this area and the quality of its tender was extremely high.

“We’re now looking forward to seeing this refurbishment completed to the high standards specified.”

Improvements to Gwyn Evans follow refurbishments of the Fitness Suites at Plas Madoc, Chirk and Waterworld Leisure and Activity Centres with Queensway Stadium and Clewedog Leisure and Activity Centre to follow in the autumn.
