Meals rooted in local produce

LocalProducePupils from a south Pembrokeshire school paid a special visit to a local farmer last week.

Youngsters from Angle VC School visited Barry Hathaway at his farm on the Angle Peninsula to see where the vegetables for their school dinners come from.

The youngsters – aided by Lennie the Leek, Pembrokeshire’s healthy school meals mascot – helped Mr Hathaway harvest fresh carrots from his fields overlooking the Milford Haven waterway.

The farm supplies carrots to all of the County’s schools – as well as schools in Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire.

“We always aim to source as much local produce as possible for our school meals service,” said Rosemary Griffiths, Pembrokeshire County Council’s Catering Services manager.

“Sourcing local produce not only benefits the environment but also supports local farmers and the local economy.”

Pembrokeshire
County Council delivers around 11,000 meals a days to primary and secondary schools in the County.

The Council has a joint contract with Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire County Councils for fruit and vegetables through suppliers Jones and Davies of Llandyssul.

It is estimated that between 1.8 and 2.4 tons of carrots are supplied to schools in the three counties from Angle weekly.
