New Social Workers set to join Swansea Council from next month

Newly-qualified social workers from across South Wales are about to join Swansea Council’s social work team.

A recruitment drive targeted at those about to qualify has been a big success and has resulted in 17 new social workers joining Child and Family services in Swansea and starting next month.

Due to the national shortage of social workers Swansea, like many other Councils in Wales and England, has experienced difficulties in recruiting Child Care Social Workers to vacant posts.

On top of the new arrivals, Swansea Council is also aiming to recruit an extra 24 social workers for Child and Family services as part of a £6.4 million additional investment in the service this year.

Chris Maggs, Director of Social Services for Swansea Council, said: “The new recruits are a welcome boost. They will become part of an improving Child and Family Services that’s being backed with £6.4m of extra investment from the Council this year.”

He said the graduates were recruited following an Open Day initiative staged by the Council in Swansea late last year.

Friendly and supportive teams, good location, varied work as well as opportunities for training and career development encouraged students to make an application.

Mr Maggs added: “Social services and particular child and family services are a priority for this Council.

“We hope that joining Swansea Council will be the start of a successful and fulfilling career for these newly qualified social workers.

“Measures are already being put in place to prepare them and provide appropriate support as they start their new roles.”

Meanwhile qualified social workers who are interested in joining the team at Swansea Council still have an opportunity to apply for jobs in the Social Services directorate.

Candidates should be registered with the Care Council for Wales and should be able to demonstrate a personal commitment to the goals and values of the Directorate and, have a clear understanding of the needs of service users.
