Ready, Steady, Go

ReadyA new project aimed at introducing children to sport has got off to a flying start.

The Sportstart scheme attracted over 25 five to seven year-olds to its Saturday morning activity sessions at Haverfordwest Leisure Centre.

Organised by Sport PembrokeshirePembrokeshire County Council’s sports development arm – and funded by the Sports Council for Wales, the pilot project is now likely to be extended to other leisure centres across the County.

“Sportstart is a new fun way of introducing an often overlooked age group to sport and activity,” said Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member for Sport and Leisure.

“The project aims to help develop movement skills such as agility balance and co-ordination so that youngsters have the basic skills necessary to take up the many different sports on offer in the County.”

The project, which was run by qualified teachers and learning support assistants, also showed youngsters the connection between sport and healthy living – as well as introducing them to simple rules.
