Tredegar tame Tigers

Last season’s Division 3 champions Tylorstown were given a 49-6 thumping at Tredegar with the league leaders running in six un-answered tries to cement themselves firmly at the top of Division 2.

Affectionately known as the Tigers,Tredegar showed their visitors from the Rhondda from the outset that it was going to be a hard afternoon when Daniel Hayman slotted a penalty within the first minute. Hayman had another terrific day with the boot slotting three penalties and five conversions to add another 19 points to his ever increasing tally.

However Tredegar’s rugby this year is not just about Hayman’s kicking prowess. With increasing fitness levels, Tredegar are far sharper in attack and also more solid in defence.

The visitors had no answer to the pace and power of the Tredegar midfield generals, Craig Lloyd and Tom Mcpherson whose bulldozing runs saw Craig Lloyd, captain for the day, bag his third brace of tries in as many games, whilst Tom Mcpherson played havoc in midfield and was justly rewarded with a try after splitting the visitors defence with ease and Tredegar look to have found a mid field partnership that is perhaps without equal in the division.

Julian Pike for the visitors kicked two penalties but with the Tredegar defence never stretched half time saw Tredegar ahead by 27-6.

After the break Ron Kynes, who put in another man of the match display, deservedly got on the score sheet while Steve Knight finished off another Tredegar attack to get his first try of the season and consign the Tigers to the foot of the division.

With three wins so far, all with bonus points, Tredegar are looking to be the team to beat and look forward to facing old rivals Penarth back at the Rec after an abscence of many years.

Scorers: Tredegar: Tries: Lloyd (2), Mcpherson, Kynes, Knight; Cons: Hayman (5); Pens – Hayman (3).
Tylorstown: Pens: Pike (2)
