Wales could win, reckons Kelleher

Byron Kelleher reckons Wales can make history by beating the All Blacks this summer.

Wales coach Warren Gatland returns to his homeland for a daunting two-Test tour, and despite the Dragons not tasting success over New Zealand since 1953, former All Blacks scrum-half Kelleher believes Wales can cause a major shock.

Kelleher, 33, said: “Wales have the players to beat the All Blacks and I’m sure Gatland will be fired up for that one. He’ll be revving up the boys today. And the All Blacks won’t have good preparation.

“They normally have a week before they can play a Test match but they will go straight off a Super 14 competition while Wales will have a bit of time together and cohesion and team work and ethic.”

Kelleher helped Toulouse into the semi-finals of the Heineken Cup with a crushing 42-16 win over French rivals Stade Francais.

And the confident number nine believes the heat will be turned up as the 2011 World Cup hosts bid to claim the world title for the first time.

Kelleher added: “New Zealand’s last game against France probably saw the French team at their best – they had a great autumn series.

“They are building like they were before the 2007 World Cup and I’m sure they have plans in place to make sure they don’t miss out at home in New Zealand.

“They are a very experienced coaching staff and with experience you have to have your highs and lows.”
