What to watch: Wild Wales: The Beautiful South

Iolo Williams returns to look at the glorious landscapes of Wales – and the thriving wildlife that lives there – in a new series for BBC Two network, Wild Wales (Sunday, July 11, BBC Two).

Each hour-long episode of the three-part series focuses on a particular area of Wales – starting with the south, moving through the heart of Wales and finishing with the rugged north west.

In the first programme, Iolo explores some of the best sites for spotting wildlife in the south as well as visiting some rare and protected species, such as the lesser horseshoe bat, in their own habitats.

Iolo’s opening trek in Wild Wales takes him from west to east, starting with a grey seal colony and red deer at Ramsey Island off St Davids, moving inland to hear the unusual sounds of the snipe below Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons and finishing with the courtship rituals of great crested grebes which have colonised an area around the Llandegfedd reservoir near Pontypool.

On the way, Iolo gets his first glimpse of a red squirrel on his home patch for 25 years, shows off spectacular scenery in the “waterfall country” west of Merthyr Tydfil, and finds some astounding sights underground in a cave system where calcites have created some stupendous, but rarely seen, displays.
