Wrexham prepares to quit on No Smoking Day

Thousands of smokers across Wrexham are being encouraged to take the opportunity of No Smoking Day on Wednesday 10 March to quit smoking. Wrexham County Borough Council’s Health Challenge Wrexham is preparing to help smokers in the town to stub it out on No Smoking Day.

No smoking day is now in its 27th year and 2010’s theme is ‘Break Free’. Health Challenge Wrexham is encouraging people to break free from their smoking habits and start their journey to become smoke free.

Health Challenge Wrexham will be hosting a drop in centre on Queen’s Square from 11am – 3pm on March 10 where smokers can call in to receive free help and advice about quitting, as well as information packs about all the ways to quit and what method would best suite you.

Linda Mullock Health Promotion Support Officer said,

“Research has shown that over two thirds of smokers want to stop. Our drop in centre provides an excellent opportunity for them to do that. By using the support available on No Smoking Day and throughout the year from Health Challenge Wrexham you can significantly increase your chance of success and giving up for good. With smoking causing 30% of all Cancer deaths, 17% of all heart disease deaths and at least 80% of deaths from Bronchitus and Emphysema we have got all the help and advice you need to become and healthier, happier you!”

Those who do quit smoking will gain many health and financial benefits in next to no time, these include:

  • Feeling fitter and having loads of energy to start that healthy lifestyle – not feeling out of breath when you reach the top of the stairs.
  • Saving loads of money – giving up a 20-a-day habit will save you around £42 a week. Stop on No Smoking Day and by June you can save over £500!
  • Having a better sex life – smoking can create hormonal imbalances which decrease libido

Dan Tickle, Chief Executive of the charity No Smoking Day, which organises the annual campaign, said,

“Good luck to all the smokers in Wrexham who are breaking free on March 10 – remember you’re not alone. Take advantage of the support available; you’ll get friendly and expert advice to help you to stop smoking for good.”
