Wythnos Ni – celebrating Gwynedd’s children and young people

A week of varied events will be held throughout Gwynedd once again to celebrate the place that the county’s children and young people hold in our society.

The second ever Gwynedd Children and Young People’s Week – Wythnos Ni – will take place between 8 and 14 November and will be marked with activities across the county. The week has been arranged by the Gwynedd Children and Young People’s Partnership and was officially launched on Friday, 8 October with the main message that Gwynedd is a good place for children and young people to celebrate, succeed and enjoy.

Iwan Trefor Jones, Chairman of the Gwynedd Children and Young People’s Partnership said: “Last year’s inaugural event was a great success and we were delighted that we are able to provide the same platform for youngsters and their families again this year. Wythnos Ni will be an opportunity to highlight the innovative work being undertaken in response to the needs of Gwynedd’s children and young people.

“Children today achieve so much in our communities and it is vitally important that we celebrate their achievements. The week will also be a great opportunity for us to hear the voice and opinions of Gwynedd’s young people about the issues which effect their everyday lives.”

Nia Morris, Gwynedd Council Youth Service Manager and Chair of the Wythnos Ni Steering Board added: “Wythnos Ni 2010 will give Gwynedd’s children and young people a platform in a series of events throughout the county. It will also provide an opportunity to highlight the work of children and young people’s organisations in Gwynedd with the key message that Gwynedd is a good place for children and young people to celebrate, succeed and enjoy.”

Specific themes have been chosen for every day throughout Wythnos Ni with a variety of activities which will celebrate the contribution and potential the area’s children and young people, as well as an opportunity to showcase and raise awareness about the services and opportunities available to them. The week will also include a conference with the Welsh Assembly Government’s Deputy Children’s Minister, with the week closing with a night celebrating the success of young people who have received accreditation at Hafan y Môr, Pwllheli.

As well as the main activities, there is a small grants scheme which is available to schools, children’s organisations and groups to arrange their own activities and events locally.
