This week it’s National Allotment Week and throughout Caerphilly County Borough, community allotments are blooming and growing amazing fruit, flowers and vegetables.

Tending an allotment can have many health benefits; it’s a great form of exercise with plenty of fresh air, allotments provide a place for quiet reflection or to socialise and make new friends and of course the immense pride in growing the produce on your plate.

There are approximately 80 allotment sites across the county borough with over 2000 plots under cultivation. There is plenty of support available from local and national federations who offer specialist advice, tips for newcomers with low cost seed, compost and fertilisers available.

Cllr. David Poole, Cabinet Member for Community & Leisure Services said, “I’d like to encourage our residents to consider taking on an allotment, as well as getting all the health benefits of regular exercise through digging and planting your patch, the end result is freshly grown produce directly to your plate at a very low cost.  There’s great satisfaction in eating something you’ve grown yourself.  Why not give it a try?”
