Narberth & the Grand National
Kirkland, the winner of the 1905 Grand National, is the only Pembrokeshire-trained horse to triumph in the famous steeplechase at Aintree, and his achievement is marked by this Narberth pub.The horse was trained twelve or so miles away at Lawrenny, and was walked to Narberth station to take the train to Liverpool for the big race. On his winning return, he was stabled here for the night (the inn was named the Commercial Hotel in those days) and the landlord charged the public 6d. to see the great horse.
