History is set to be made at a Swansea secondary school this week as work starts on an upgrade project to make it a state-of-the-art learning environment.
Construction work is starting on creating a refurbished teaching block at Cefn Hengoed Community School which will feature hi-tech science labs, a range of computer suites and a new flexible library space.
The multi-million pound project at the 650-pupil school has been funded by an £8m grant from the Welsh Assembly Government and £2m from Swansea Council’s own funds. Preparations have been taking place over a number of months to pave the way for the main upgrade, so pupils will not be affected by the work.
Head Teacher Sue Hollister said: “This is a really exciting moment in the life of the school. We’re looking forward to seeing the revamped block take shape over the months to come and the school, Council and contractors will be working together to ensure there is no disruption for pupils as the work progresses.”
The early work will include site set out works and a creation of a rear access road for works traffic.
A new website has been set up which will give details of the project as it progresses and features architects’ images and photos of the site. Log onto www.swansea.gov.uk/cefnhengoedbuild to find out more.
Geraint Flowers, Swansea Council Education Project Officer, said: “This project will create an improved learning environment and a landmark building in the heart of the community. Environmentally-friendly features are central to the design, such as energy efficient heating and electrical systems.”
