Just as South Wales Intercultural Community Arts (SWICA) is celebrating its 21st Anniversary this year, so the Cardiff MAS Carnival which like SWICA began in 1990 will be enjoying its 21st Birthday too.
“Cosmic Celts” is the name of Cardiff MAS Carnival 2010 : a tribute through Carnival to Celtic culture and mythology including ancient gods and goddesses.
Steve Fletcher, Artistic Director of SWICA says “ SWICA promises that the Cardiff MAS Carnival 2010 will be Wales’ biggest and brightest carnival parade to date.”
Monday, July 12th, sees the Launch at the MAS camp in Channel View Leisure Centre in Grangetown of Cardiff MAS Carnival 2010 featuring spectacular DRAGON costumes and an acrobatic jumping stilts display from Team Renegade.
At the launch, themes and ideas for this year’s costumes will be on display to delight and inspire community participants, with taster performances of carnival dance to liberate the carnival spirit, it is a night not to be missed for all budding carnivalists.
Steve Fletcher continues “The Cardiff MAS Carnival Parade is only 3 weeks away so take this opportunity to join our team of multicultural artists, designers and dancers and make new friends at Channel View Leisure Centre. We are open to the public every day, including Sundays, from Tuesday 13th July to Thursday 29th July (noon to 8pm) and there are opportunities for everyone to create and participate in this years masquerade parade on Saturday 31st July as part of Cardiff’s Big Weekend.”
Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Leisure, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: “The Mas Carnival is one of the highlights of the Summer Festival programme. The event provides a fantastic carnival atmosphere in the city and the colourful and flamboyant costumes add a magical summer feel.
“This year, the carnival celebrates its 21st anniversary and I am delighted that it continues to go from strength to strength. I look forward to seeing the costumes and enjoying the music that will form this special anniversary carnival.”
