£136 million comes with change of homes ownership

Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd formally takes over the ownership and management of Gwynedd Council’s homes on Monday, April 12th.

Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd (CCG) is set to invest £136 million on improving its tenants’ homes in the next five years to bring homes up to the Welsh Housing Quality Standard. A total of £446 million will be spent over 30 years to ensure homes are kept up to standard in the future.

The new, independent, not-for-profit, local housing organisation marks taking over the ownership and management of the Council’s 6,300 homes with a series of ground make-over events on its estates in Llanberis, Pwllheli, Bangor and Bala.

Tenants were consulted on Gwynedd Council’s proposal to transfer their homes to CCG and voted in favour of the move in March 2009.

CCG’s initial five-year £136 million improvement programme will include:

5,000 new modern kitchens
4,200 new modern bathrooms
2,500 homes will have new windows
£6.3 million to be spent on environmental improvements
Ffrancon Williams, CCG Chief Executive, said: “Tenants voted for Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd to be created on the basis of promises made to them; promises to improve their homes, estates and communities. We will work hard to make sure their faith is well placed.

“In meeting our promises, we are also presented with a real opportunity – to make a lasting difference to people’s lives.”

Dafydd P Lewis, Gwynedd Council Corporate Director said: “This is an exciting period for tenants – their decision to vote to transfer ownership and management of their homes to Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd will mean significant improvements to former council houses over the next five years, and Gwynedd Council wishes them every success in the future. The Council also looks forward to working with Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd, along with the other housing associations active within Gwynedd, to respond to the housing needs of the area.”

John Glyn Jones, Chair of CCG Board, added: “The official launch of the organisation marks a new beginning. Millions of pounds will be ploughed into our tenants’ homes during the next few years, investment which will make real and lasting change, not just for today’s tenants but for future generation of tenants too.”

A special breakfast reception to mark the transfer will be held on Tuesday 13th of April at Porthmadog Football Club with guests including tenants who helped shape the transfer consultation, CCG Board members and employees together with councillors, partners and stakeholders.
