£15.8m to Help Keep Welsh Streets Safe

Lesley_GriffithsWrexham Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths has welcomed the Welsh Government’s decision to fund a further £15.8 million, enabling one of its central policing policies to continue.

One of the Welsh Government’s key priorities, set out in its Programme for Government back in 2011, was to fund an additional 500 police Community Support Officers (CSOs) across Wales.

The full target of 500 officers was reached last October and now this latest funding ensures the scheme will continue to prosper.

All four Welsh police forces will benefit from the funding and the achievement has practically doubled the number of CSOs on Welsh streets.

In addition, the Welsh Government has also announced an extra £257,000 will continue to fund seven CSOs with British Transport Police and part fund a Police Inspector post based in North Wales over a three-year period.

Wrexham AM Griffiths commented:

“This key Welsh Government initiative has proved to be very popular. CSOs are a highly visible presence in their communities and play a crucial role in engaging with people, providing reassurance and tackling anti-social behaviour.”

“I am pleased funding is in place so the CSOs can continue to help keep our streets safer.”
