South Wales Police in a joint operation with the Metropolitan Police have arrested and charged 19 South Wales based men for the violent disorder that occurred in London on 13th February 2010 following the FA cup match against Chelsea.
The 19 men have been all been charged with violent disorder and bailed to court with the conditions not to attend at any football matches.
Detective Superintendent Liane James from South Wales Police said, “We recognise that it is a small minority of the travelling football community that get involved in violence – by relentlessly pursuing and prosecuting offenders we can make the environment safer for genuine fans and families who travel to support Cardiff City.
The partnership between South Wales Police, Cardiff City FC and genuine Cardiff City supporters is strong. Together we refuse to tolerate this type of behaviour at football fixtures. We will continue to work to understand and respond to the football communities needs, in particular to ensure a safe and secure environment for fans to watch and support their team.”
Cardiff City Football Club said, “Cardiff City note that once again a tiny minority who purport to support the team were intent on causing disorder at the FA Cup match against Chelsea in February. We are fully aware of Operation Ternhill and have been actively working with the police in South Wales and London to help trace the individuals, in order that they are held accountable for their actions.
We would stress that we consider these individuals as forming no part of Cardiff City Football Club and that the Club will continue to work with South Wales Police to build on the progress already made in ensuring that we remove from the game any individuals intent on causing disorder. We will also carry on working with the police and supporter groups in order to ensure that we continue to offer a suitable and safe environment in which the public can watch and support the team.
Police have a further 25 suspects in relation to the disorder at the Cardiff v Chelsea match in February. A joint operation to arrest these offenders is planned in the coming months.
