1940’s wartime Britain with a Roman twist comes to Blackwood in 2011

If you are looking for a night out to see a performance with a difference, the award-winning Ovid’s Metamorphoses at Blackwood Miners’ Institute is for you!

Monday 23rd May at 7.30pm will see theatre company Pants On Fire’s award-winning performance, Ovid’s Metamorphoses arrive in Blackwood.

Metamorphoses is a poem written by the Roman poet Ovid around the time of Christ, and is considered to be one of the most important sources of Roman and Greek myth.

Pants on Fire transport us to 1940’s wartime Britain in their version, where Narcissus is an iconic Hollywood film star, Echo is a gossipy housewife, and the Chorus are like the Andrews Sisters – finding close harmony amid cosmic chaos – you won’t forget these characters in a hurry!

You’ll be treated to an early 20th century styled cabaret act complete with full period costumes, roaring show-tunes, a blending of live original music and song, comedy, projection, puppetry, gasmasks and a gramophone.

Ovid’s Metamorphoses is an exploration of man’s inextricable link with nature and the universe, and was winner of both the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award and the Whatsonstage.com Editor’s Choice Award.

Sharon Casey, General Manager at Blackwood Miners’ Institute first saw a performance of Ovid’s Metamorphoses at the Edinburgh Festival last August. She liked it so much, she booked it for Blackwood Miners’ Institute.

Sharon said, “I had no knowledge of Ovid’s Metamorphoses beforehand but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it because many of the characters and stories were actually very familiar – and they were told in such an engaging way with lots of puppetry, live music and an inventive use of projection and props”.

She continued, “The stories are told in a series of short sketches and its all set in war-time Britain, so we have Cupid the little evacuee who wreaks havoc with his bow and arrow, and Icarus (who flew too close to the sun) is an RAF pilot.  It really is one of the best show I’ve ever seen!”

…Glorious. A breakthrough show…” The Guardian.

Tickets for Ovid’s Metamorphoses are available now and cost £12 and £10 for concessions.
