Homes in Penlan are to get a £2.25m upgrade as part of Swansea Council plans to improve 1940s-built properties in the area.
Cabinet has agreed to invest the cash over the next three years for improvements to 75 properties that will include new roof coverings and insulated walls with a new render finish. Front and back doors, electrical wiring and boilers will also be renewed.
The improvements are part of a long-term strategy to upgrade the steel-framed family homes constructed using the British Iron and Steel Federation system.
The work will take place in Heol Trefor, Heol Cadifor and Heol Hermas.
BISF houses generally consist of steel cladding over a plasterboard or timber sub-structure. They were created to meet the demand for homes in the decades following World War II.
The contract will be over three years to maximise the efficiencies that such continuity can bring and will include social clauses to promote local employment as part of Swansea Council’s Beyond Bricks and Mortar strategy.
Peter May, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “The look of the properties would be totally transformed by the improvements.
“But more importantly it will mean that thanks to the external works and internal improvements to upgrade heating and electrical systems, families will be able to enjoy homes that are more energy efficient than ever before,” he said.
“That will help reduce fuel bills which is good for families and good for the environment too.”
