Commenting on figures published by RSPCA Cymru, which show a 20% rise in convictions in Wales for animal cruelty in 2013 and a 50% hike in the number of offenders receiving a caution, Russell George AM, Shadow Minister for Natural resources, said:
“These are concerning figures appearing to show a worrying and depressing rise in the abuse and neglect of animals in Wales.
“RSPCA Cymru, animal rescue centres and hundreds of volunteers work to identify safe and loving homes for mistreated and neglected animals, who all deserve a decent quality of life.
“It is vital that the perpetrators of these hateful crimes are brought to justice and prevented from owning animals in future.
“For the vast majority of animal owners, their pet is a member of their family who enriches their life, keeps them active and makes them laugh and this is the real picture of animal ownership in Wales.”
