Over 120 local people welcomed the National Eisteddfod’s plans to visit Denbighshire in 2013, at a public meeting held last night (18 April). The meeting was an opportunity to learn more about the Eisteddfod and its site, and to encourage people to get involved in the preparations for the festival, held from 3-10 August 2013.
National Eisteddfod Organiser, Hywel Wyn Edwards, said, “We’re pleased with the number of people who joined us at the meeting last night, and we also very much welcome the enthusiasm of local people regarding the Eisteddfod. We know that Denbighshire has been eager to host the National Eisteddfod for the past few years, and it’s good news for the area and for us that we’ll be returning to the town in 2013.
“Last night’s meeting was a chance to begin organising the Eisteddfod locally, and the response was great, and the next step now is to encourage local people to volunteer for the committees, which will be set up over the next few weeks before the summer.”
Hywyn Williams, Denbighshire County Council’s Corporate Director – Communities and Learning, added, “As expected, there was great support for the Eisteddfod in the public meeting, and it is good to see that people are already enthusiastic across the county. We’re all looking forward to seeing another successful Eisteddfod in the county, following the success of the 2001 festival.
“The Council is committed to working with Eisteddfod officials, the local executive committee and communities across the county to organise a week to remember. The hard work starts now, and we will be taking every opportunity to promote the festival and what Denbighshire has to offer.”
John Glyn Jones was elected Chair of the local Executive Committee, with Eifion Lloyd Jones elected as Deputy Chair. Wayne Roberts will serve as Committee Secretary.
The next step takes place at Denbigh High School at 18.30 on Wednesday 18 May, when the individual committees will be established. The Chairs of each of these committees will also serve on the local Executive Committee.
Information on how to volunteer to serve on one of these committees is included on the National Eisteddfod website – www.eisteddfod,org.uk – where you can download the form to return to the Eisteddfod Office. Information will also be released locally over the coming weeks. You can also contact the office on 0845 4090 400 for more information.
The National Eisteddfod attracts 150,000 – 160,000 visitors every year, and is held alternatively in north and south Wales. Entry to all Eisteddfod activities is free for the price of a daily Maes ticket.
The Wrexham and District National Eisteddfod is held on Lower Berse Farm, off Ruthin Road, Wrexham from 30 July – 6 August. The Vale of Glamorgan National Eisteddfod is held on the old Llandow airfield from 4-11 August 2012.
