£300,000 fitness centre unveiled by Paralympics gold medalist

Improvement work carried out at the fitness centre at the Arfon Tennis Centre means that Caernarfon can now boast of one of Wales’ top family fitness rooms.

The Gwynedd Council facility which includes nine fitness stations machines will be officially unveiled on Friday, 24 June 2011 as part of an inclusive sports day held at the Arfon Tennis Centre in Caernarfon. Paralympics and World Shooting gold medalist, Matt Skelhon will be part of the official opening.

The new-look fitness room includes a range of the latest gym equipment with a 25 station fitness room which includes a Mokoto and Lightwall reaction machines – the first to be installed in the UK.

Councillor Roy Owen, Gwynedd Council portfolio holder with responsibility for leisure, said:

“I’m delighted to see the new and improved facility at the Arfon Tennis Centre and pleased that the Council has been able to invest in these important and popular services. The new gym is suitable for the whole family and also includes the latest inclusive fitness machines which offer disabled people some of the best facilities in Wales.

“We all know that keeping active is key to a healthy and happy life and I hope these improvements at the Tennis Centre will encourage more people to use the facilities we have on-offer.”

As part of the £300,000 improvements at the Arfon Tennis Centre, the fitness room which has now doubled in size is one of the very best available for disability sport participants.

Marcus Politis, Gwynedd Council Disability Sport Wales Development Officer added:

“This investment underlines that Gwynedd Council is committed to providing inclusive facilities – indeed the new-look fitness suite at the Arfon Tennis Centre is now one of Wales’ most accessible.

“Wheelchair users can use the fitness machines without having to get out of their chairs or transferring to static seats – and facilities are also available for people with visually impaired people with high visibility and tactile provision on some equipment.

“We look forward to seeing a number of new visitors to the Arfon tennis Centre as part of the official opening – there will be a range of taster events held as part of the day, so why not come along and see what’s on offer.”

A series of inclusive sport events will be staged as part of the official launch on 24 June 2011, with Paralympics and World Shooting gold medalist, Matt Skelhon on-hand to offer advice. The 2012 Paralympics Ambassador will also be on-hand to showcase his skills using a Scatt Shooter Training System which Gwynedd Air Target club acquired from Russia.
