£36,000 to support older people in Ceredigion

Social Justice and Local Government Minister Carl Sargeant has announced over £36,000 of funding to support older people in Ceredigion.

The funding will support an Age Concern Outreach project that provides advice and information about local services to older people in Ceredigion. The money will fund weekly drop-in sessions at the Tregaron Communities First partnership, Penparcau and West Aberystwyth Communities First areas.

The funding is part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s Communities First programme that aims to improve the opportunities and quality of life for people living in the most disadvantaged communities in Wales.

The project aims to improve the quality of life and well being of older people by helping them understand and claim the welfare benefits they are entitled to. The Age Concern project also encourages older people to take part in volunteering in opportunities to get more involved in and engage with their members of their local community.

The project will also encourage local people to give up their free time to help older people from the community in their day to day lives. Helping older people with their shopping, cleaning and finances has a hugely positive impact upon their lives.

The Minister said:

“The Age Concern Outreach project is an excellent example of Communities First partnerships working together to improve the local community. The help and support offered by this project is invaluable. Accessing public services and claiming benefits can be daunting and confusing for older people, by offering clear information and support this project simplifies the process.

“Communities First projects continue to help people some of Wales’ most vulnerable people and I look forward to seeing how the Age Concern Outreach project improves the lives of older people in Ceredigion.”
