50 Years of Welsh Medium School

Twm o’r Nant will conclude its year long 50th birthday celebrations with a weekend of festivities in October.

On Friday, 15 October, the school will host a concert at Capel Mawr in Denbigh, where the school started back in 1960.

The concert will include performances by singer Rhys Meirion who used to teach at the school and Nia Tudur (a former pupil, now a reporter with BBC Radio Cymru and a familiar face on stage at Eisteddfodau).  The school choir, a choir of former pupils and even a choir made up of staff members will add to the entertainment.  Angharad Llwyd a former pupil and star of S4C will compare the evening.   On Saturday, 16 October, the school is hosting an open day from 10am to 2pm.  Everyone is invited to come and look around at displays, both past and present, photos of the old days and enjoy some refreshments.

On the Saturday evening the headteacher, Geraint Davies, is hosting a Gala Dinner at Brookhouse Mill.

Tickets for both the concert and the dinner are on sale at the school 01745 812261.  Cost of the tickets is £8 for the concert and £10 for the dinner.

These events bring to a close a year of celebrations which have included burying a time capsule and commissioning a new and different mural in the school’s entrance way.

The clay mural has been made by local artist Ffion Larson and it welcomes visitors to the school in a unique way as Ffion has taken a clay model of the hand of each pupil and member os staff and written “Croeso i Ysgol Twm o’r Nant”.

Headteacher, Geraint Davies, said, “It’s a unique mural which will live on into the future.  In 25 years’ time when we unearth the time capsule we buried recently to celebrate our 50th birthday, some of the children who have hand prints on the mural will hopefully be parents in Denbigh and will show their children their handprint.  It’s all about community spirit and continuity.”
