Plans for the £6.5 million redevelopment of Eastern Leisure Centre look set to get the green light from the City of Cardiff Council. The modernisation plans will be discussed at a Cabinet meeting on June 12 and if the proposals are agreed as expected, a procurement process to select a contractor for the development will begin. Work on the site in Llanrumney is scheduled to start in the autumn of 2014.
Cabinet Member for Community Development, Co-operatives and Social Enterprise, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said: “The modernisation of Eastern Leisure Centre has enjoyed strong support from both the community and elected Councillors so this multi-million pound investment will be welcome news.”
“Eastern Leisure Centre is highly valued in the local community, last year 250,000 people came through its doors and evidence suggests this number will only increase once the redevelopment is finished.”
Main features of the revitalised leisure centre will be an open reception area; a licensed café/juice bar overlooking the swimming pool; village style changing rooms; an enhanced swimming pool; greatly improved gym facilities; a new dance studio; a new spin room and improved soft play facilities. Residents will also benefit from the upgrading of the current outdoor five-a-side area with an improved surface.
Cllr Bradbury continued: “The leisure market has changed in recent years and Eastern Leisure Centre needs to change with it. The redevelopment of the centre will ensure that residents have access to high quality leisure facilities in their community.”
The redevelopment work is due to be completed by the spring of 2016.
