Unofficial figures for the first nine months of the year 2010/11 show Denbighshire residents are still the best recyclers in Wales.
The current rate of 56% is four percentage points up on the equivalent figure last year.
Denbighshire was the first Welsh county to record a recycling rate of over 50% for an entire year in 2009/10. Now, several exciting new developments give cause to believe that a 60% recycling rate is within reach.
A further roll-out of the x2 wheelybin recycling and refuse service will replace sack collections at around 3,000 households in the south of the county, is planned for the early summer. More details on this will be published soon.
In its first two months of operation, the new Recycling Park at Rhyl is achieving higher recycling rates than at the old sites it replaced.
New materials like carpets and mattresses are being recycled and contributing to this improvement.
The Council is also now taking all the items collected through the bulky waste collection service to a new facility where as much as possible is recycled. Also, all the waste from sweeping the Council’s roads is being sent to a recycling plant in Widnes where over 90% is diverted from landfill.
These developments, plus the new recycling contract with UPMKymmene, mean that Denbighshire residents really are in a position to be the first to reach 60%.
