£7.7m investment for Aberdare

A £7.7m scheme to revitalise Aberdare town centre will go ahead following a funding boost from the Welsh Assembly Government.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s regeneration plans have received the green light which includes £5.5m from the European Regional Development Fund, Heads of the Valleys Programme and the Targeted Match Fund through the Assembly Government. The remainder of the funding package is provided by Rhondda Cynon Taf, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Cadw and the private sector.

The investment will enable the major redevelopment of Aberdare to create a modern, appealing urban space that attracts more people to shop, work, live and socialise in the town.

The scheme will also enable better access in and around the town – whether by foot, bicycle or car.

Cllr Paul Cannon, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Safer Communities, said: “It is a real coup for us to secure this significant investment via the Welsh Assembly Government.

“Combined with Council investment and other funding streams, we are looking to spend nearly £8m to create an urban space that celebrates and respects Aberdare’s history, while creating an attractive, appealing town centre for the future.

“This is really exciting news and we are pleased to be working on behalf of the many communities in Aberdare to deliver our regeneration strategy.”

Deputy Minister for Housing and Regeneration Jocelyn Davies AM said: “This scheme will significantly enhance the way in which public spaces are used in the town and boost the local economy. It will bring employment opportunities and commercial confidence, contributing to the regeneration of Aberdare and its surrounding communities. “

Business and Budget Minister Jane Hutt AM said: “Investing in our towns will not only make them more attractive places to live and work, but will bring renewed pride and attract further investment into the area. I am delighted that our management of EU resources will contribute to increasing prosperity for people and businesses in the town and beyond.”

The investment will help improve the design and layout of the Library Square and the western entrance to Canon Street to create a public space where activities and events can take place.

Commercial buildings in the town will also receive a makeover while Commercial Street, Eastern Canon Street and Victoria Square will undergo regeneration work. Footways and road surfaces will also be upgraded to complement the Victorian character of Aberdare.

Pedestrian and cycle routes will be developed to link the town to the stunning Dare Valley Country Park, surrounding areas and open spaces and public transport stations.

Traffic management measures will be put in place to improve the flow of traffic and safety.
