A Welsh Conservative call for ‘UN Principles for Older Persons’ to be enshrined in law has been agreed in the Welsh Parliament.
An amendment to the Social Services Bill – tabled by Shadow Minister for Older People, Darren Millar AM – was passed in the Senedd on Tuesday afternoon.
Amendment:
A person exercising functions under this Act in relation to an adult falling within subsection (2) (a) or (b), who is aged 60 or over, must, in addition, have due regard to the United Nations Principles for Older Persons.
Tuesday’s vote ensures UN principles for older persons are recognised in the Social Services Bill.
Mr Millar said:
“Enshrining these principles in Welsh law had widespread support throughout Wales and I am extremely heartened to see this amendment passed in our Parliament.
“Wales has already legislated for children’s rights and it was clear that a law to protect older people’s rights was also needed.
“Today’s decision sends a clear message to all those involved in the care and support of older people. Senior citizens must not be denied the respect they deserve and this vote ensures more is done to prevent further tragic cases of lost dignity.
“Following my own calls in a Welsh Parliament debate – a consultation on proposals for a Welsh Declaration of the Rights of Older People has already begun.
“It is clear that Wales is leading the way – but progress must not stop here.”
