Glyndwr University, the Wrexham-based University, which is just five years old, enjoyed a staggering 32% increase in acceptances during the 2013/14 UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admission Service) cycle.
The upturn was the fifth highest in the UK.
And latest figures for 2014/15 reveal the institution – which is currently undergoing a restructure to become more “efficient and effective” – is currently 20% up on last year’s record-breaking numbers.
Glyndŵr’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Michael Scott, said the surge in prospective students is testament to the hard work of the university’s academic and operational staff.
“The university is just five years old but it’s already hugely popular,” he said.
“People know that if they want to get to Glyndŵr they have to apply now, and we will cater for their needs. Whether they are young or old we strive to make the academic and social experience here as positive as possible, and they realise that.”
Prof Scott added:
“We are in the process of restructuring the university and preparing for a new era; a period of development that will help shape its future.
“What lies ahead is an opportunity to build on Glyndwr’s many successes and take the next evolutionary step in maturing as an institution, and as an indispensable partner of industry in the economic and social development of North East Wales.
“There is a long way to go but these positive UCAS figures show that people want to join a university that is new and vibrant, internationally significant and open to all; I would like to thank all of our staff for their hard work.”
The number of UK student acceptances at Glyndŵr rose by 39% between 2012 and 2013.
Head of Recruitment Julie Cowley said the upturn bucks the trend in other parts of the UK.
“It’s very encouraging to see UCAS acceptances up significantly this year, relative to other Universities” she said.
“A number of new initiatives were put in place to attract students, and we have many new courses beginning in 2014 that have already proven popular.
“Among them are (subject to validation) Chemistry with Green Nanotechnology, Sport Leadership and Development, Computer Game Development, and Immersive Technology.
“To see our applications for 2014/15 also receiving such a great boost this early in the application cycle is a great way to start the year.”
