Glyndŵr University’s St Asaph campus is hosting one of the Institute of Physics’ major conferences for the first time from Monday 7 to Wednesday 9 April.

The focus for the event is research into composite materials, one of the key components in the development of modern, fuel efficient aircraft.

Representatives from the nuclear and medical applications industries will also feature.

Frances Saunders, president of the IoP, will be keynote speaker at the conference, titled ‘Advanced Materials for Demanding Applications’.

Alison McMillan, Professor in aerospace technology at Glyndŵr University, is co-chairing the event with Dr Steven Schofield from University College London, and the IoP’s Claire Garland.

Prof McMillan said: “The conference brings together fundamental research into materials at the atomic and molecular scale, right through to engineering design to take advantage of novel and new materials understanding.

“Or put it another way, everything from the latest research into graphene through to applications in space technology.

“This is a truly international conference, attracting speakers and delegates from all around the globe.

“We’re proud and excited that Glyndŵr University is hosting the event for the first time and look forward to hearing about the latest developments in the field of advanced materials.”

A spokesman for the IoP said: “The event aims to bring together researchers with interests in composites and other specialist materials, with technology demonstrators working in demanding engineering applications requiring high specific strength or stiffness, high temperature performance, high tolerance geometrical stability or other unusual and challenging requirements.”

Sponsors and exhibitors are currently being sought for the conference.

A science and technology exhibition will run at the conference from April 7 to 8, followed by a Welsh arts and crafts event on Wednesday April 9.

Companies interested in being involved are urged to contact Prof McMillan at Glyndŵr University by emailing [email protected] or calling 01978 294418 or 07850 725 880.
