Denbighshire Calls on Welsh Government to Provide Grants for Flood Affected Households

denbighshireDenbighshire’s Cabinet Lead Member for Environment, Councillor David Smith, has called for the Welsh Government to take the UK Government’s lead and provide grant funding for the 150 households that were affected by the floods in East Rhyl in December, as well as other communities across Wales.

“The time is now for the Welsh Government to provide direct financial assistance to households affected by the winter flooding, in the same way that UK Government is providing £5,000 per household in England.

Councillor Smith explained that during the winter storms, over 300 homes were flooded across Wales, with repair costs to coastal defences estimated to be around £8.1m – approximately £1.8m in Denbighshire.

“The Welsh Government has already pledged around £4.6M for those repairs – but nothing yet directly for households affected but if we want to encourage householders to make their homes more resilient for future years, the best way to do this would be to offer a grant in the way that the UK Government has, to be used to include flood protection measures in their repairs.

“I can’t stress enough that the Welsh Government needs to make this pledge and urgent commitment now as residents in East Rhyl and other communities have already started the repair and recovery work on their own homes.”
