The cultural, social and economic opportunities the National Eisteddfod will bring to the people and businesses of Montgomeryshire in 2015 has been highlighted during a coffee morning hosted by AM Russell George.

The national cultural event, which has an international standing, will be staged near Meifod between 1-8 August next year on the site of the last National Eisteddfod in the area in 2003.

Mr George welcomed the chairman of the local Eisteddfod committee, Beryl Vaughan and Delma Thomas of the learners’ committee to the coffee morning. They both spoke about the importance of the event to the area and how people can get involved.

“The National Eisteddfod is a major event in the Welsh cultural calendar and we should be very proud to have it once again coming to Montgomeryshire next year,” said Mr George, who was joined by Montgomeryshire MP, Glyn Davies and Shadow Minister for Culture and Welsh Language, Suzy Davies AM.

“It is not only an important cultural and social event for the people of and visitors to Wales, but it will have a significant economic impact on the local area with tens of thousands of people visiting the event during the week-long event.

“Local businesses, accommodation providers and visitor attractions can benefit from prior to, during and after this major event.”

He urged residents and businesses to get involved with the Montgomeryshire and the Marches National Eisteddford organising committee. They can visit www.nationaleisteddfod.org.uk for more information.

“This is an opportunity to put Montgomeryshire on the national and international map. Let’s get involved and highlight what a great place Montgomeryshire is to visit,” he added.
