Suzy Davies, the new Shadow Sports Minister, has called for more people to volunteer to support the IPC Athletics European Championships that are taking place in Swansea.
After meeting Jon Morgan of Disability Sport Wales at the promotional event in Swansea Quadrant, Suzy said “With the European Championships coming to Swansea, the whole of Wales has a huge opportunity to be part of something of global sporting significance.”
The Welsh Conservative AM for South Wales West went on to say “Sport is a common language. Following London 2012, Wales can be taking the lead in encouraging more people to talk sport, be part of sport.”
“Parasport can play a great part in inspiring people of all ages and abilities to get involved in sport and physical activities. I was lucky enough to meet James Ledger who is Britain’s number one long jump athlete in the F12 category. He is visually impaired, a class athlete, and a fantastic role model for young people in Wales, whether they are into sport or not.”
As well as its social benefits, Suzy was keen to hear about the economic positives that the Championships could bring to the region. “These Championships have the ability to bring at least £1.5 million to the area.
Beyond that, is the legacy of bringing sport to whole new groups of the community, inspired by the feats they see to be more active.”
“That is why I would encourage as many people as possible to apply to become ‘Swansea Champions’ for the Championships this August. This is our chance to sell Swansea to the world as well as allowing people to feel like they have been a genuine part of the city’s success.”
