The recommendations of the Silk Commission must be implemented at the earliest possible opportunity. That was the message of the Plaid Cymru – The Party of Wales leader as she reflected on the second part of the Commission’s report.
The Party of Wales leader said that there was consensus that the current system is unsatisfactory – as was demonstrated in the Commission’s report – and called on government on both ends of the M4 to act quickly to bring an end to constitutional confusion.
The Party of Wales Leader Leanne Wood said:
“The current model of devolution is unsatisfactory. The Silk Commission – with cross-party support – made clear recommendations yesterday to deliver a better and clearer settlement.
“The recommendations of the Silk Commission should be implemented at the earliest possible opportunity to end constitutional confusion.
“It’s now up to governments at both ends of the M4 to work quickly to deliver what has been agreed. There is no reason and no justification for delaying this process.
“These powers are vital if we are to build our economy and create work, and this is Plaid Cymru’s priority.
“The Silk Commission was an exercise in examining what powers Wales needs to catch up with Scotland and Northern Ireland, and while yesterday’s report goes some of the way to addressing these shortcomings Plaid Cymru is clear that there is much more that should be done to address this.
“Public opinion in Wales is ahead of the curve when it comes to taking on more responsibility, and it’s time that government plays catch up.”
