The Chair of Flintshire County Council, Councillor Carolyn Thomas visited a couple from Hawarden to help celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary.

Sylvia and Peter Gaston were married in Stockport on 1 March 1954 after meeting two years earlier at the Ritz Cinema, where they both worked.

Mr Gaston said: “I was following a family tradition in being a trainee cinema manager on the ABC circuit. Based at the Ritz Cinema, Stockport, my eye soon spotted a rather pretty part-time usherette, Sylvia; particularly the rather splendid manner in which she glided up the circle stairs! Sylvia and I went out for the first time, believe it or not, to a cinema!”

The couple lived in Keighley, Yorkshire, bringing up three sons and moved to Vicar’s Cross in Chester for Peter’s job as a salesman. They retired to a bungalow in Hawarden, where they now live with one of their sons, Peter.

Councillor Carolyn Thomas said:

“It was lovely to meet Mr and Mrs Gaston and be invited to share their special celebrations. I think it’s marvellous that they have shared so many happy years together. I would like to congratulate them on their Diamond wedding anniversary – what a wonderful achievement!”
