It may only be January and frost or snow may still be on the ground but Swansea Council’s Specialist Parks Team has already started taking orders for its ever popular hanging basket scheme.
The expert team is hoping to make this year’s hanging basket scheme bigger and brighter than ever and will be using every day in the run up to May to prepare for the scheme. This will include choosing the best blooms for the displays.
For the first time this year the hanging basket scheme will not only just be open to businesses but also householders who will be able to buy blooming baskets to brighten their communities as well.
For the last 21 years the scheme has proved a simple and cost effective way to brighten up the city and this has enabled shop fronts and business premises to be decorated with beautiful floral hanging and lamppost baskets.
Running from May to September in 2010 the scheme will aim to make the city brim with colour and make Swansea a more attractive place to shop, live, work and visit.
Once again, for a small charge, businesses will be supplied with hanging baskets that will contain an array of colourful flowers including Begonias, Surfinia and Diascia. These will be watered and maintained by the Specialist Parks Team throughout the summer.
But also in 2010 local residents can have a hanging basket for £27.10 made up and delivered directly to their door in readiness for summer.
Steve Protheroe, Specialist Parks Manager, said: “The hanging basket scheme has been running for over 20 years and is always popular. This year, due to frequent requests, we’re opening up the scheme to residents.
“It is a great opportunity for businesses and residents and will add a touch of spring to their premises with the added bonus that they don’t even have to get their fingers dirty.”
The deadline for ordering baskets is Saturday February 27. Orders are dependent on the location of businesses and residents and the number participating in the particular area.
