Commenting on the findings of WJEC’s Internal Review into this January’s GCSE English Language Unit 1 and 2 results, Aled Roberts, Welsh Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Education said:
“Barring inconsistent work by one examiner, the review found that papers were marked both accurately and consistently. Where that has not been the case, it is absolutely right for WJEC to re-mark that particular examiner’s work.
“The ball is now firmly in the Welsh Labour Government’s court. It is clear that WJEC believe that examiners worked within the marking scheme that was agreed with the Welsh Labour Government. Yet, despite promises from the Government that pupils would not be disadvantaged by the new system, both pupils and schools are now feeling very let down. It is clear there has been a complete lack of communication to schools about these examinations.
“It’s hugely disappointing that the Welsh Labour government has seemingly failed to take the profession with it and failed to make sure schools were prepared in time.
“Rather than criticise schools and the teaching profession, the Education Minister must now act quickly to ensure there will be clarity for the future and no concern whatsoever that the GCSE results which are released in August will be in any doubt as to their veracity.”
