Young people from Ynysddu gave their green fingers an airing last week by planting trees in an area close to their school to create a new community woodland.

The tree planting event was organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Countryside and Landscape Service and Groundwork on the 3rd and 4th of April to plant trees on an area of land that had been used by local residents for informal recreation, as part of a scheme to improve the area for wildlife.

Pupils from Ynysddu Primary School, students from Ystrad Mynach College and volunteers from Future Steps, a project aimed at getting people skills to get back into work, all gave a helping hand.  Community spirited local residents also got involved when they saw the transformation taking place and joined in to help plant the trees behind Glenview Terrace, Ynysddu.

Despite the drizzly, wet weather over 1,000 trees were planted over the two day period.

Cllr Ken James, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Sustainable Development commented, “By giving schools the chance to get involved in creating this wonderful woodland, the children develop a real sense of ownership over green spaces in their area. Caring for the local environment has a positive effect on the whole community.”
