Despite challenging weather conditions it is business as usual for South Wales Police with officers and staff working in difficult conditions to keep South Wales safe.
Assistant Chief Constable Nick Croft said:
“The continued changes in weather conditions over the last week have proved challenging for force, however, we are extremely proud of the commitment and dedication of our staff in ensuring that it remains business as usual for South Wales Police.
“Our priority is to ensure a 24/7 emergency service to the communities of South Wales and we are working hard to meet the additional demands placed upon us.
“We are also working in partnership with emergency services across the force area to ensure the delivery of all front-line services to our communities.
“Throughout this period of bad weather I have been heartened by the continued co-operation between the emergency and voluntary services in ensuring we reach those most in need.
“However, I would also encourage members of the public to look out for those members of our communities who may become vulnerable during this time, by checking on an elderly relatives or neighbours to ensure their well being.
“The weather is forecast to improve towards to the end of the week, however, I continue to ask those who have to travel to check the Traffic Wales website www.traffic-wales.com for the latest information on their route before setting out”.
The following precautions can be taken when driving:
- Allow extra time for the journey
- Ensure you have 100% visibility before setting off
- Drive slowly
- Make use of main roads and avoid less used routes
- Allow enough distance between you and the vehicle ahead
- Take a flask with a hot drink
- Take warm clothing
ACC Croft is also urging members of the public to have fun in the snow, but to do so safely:
“I would encourage people to have a good time but to avoid putting themselves or others at risk.
“We have received reports of people ice skating on a number of frozen rivers and ponds. I urge members of the public to avoid all frozen water as what looks like ice may not be as strong or frozen as they believe it is and they are putting themselves in danger.
“Please, enjoy the weather, but do so safely”.
