Plaid Responds to Unemployment and Average Earnings Figures

Rhun ap IorwerthIn response to today’s unemployment figures, the Party of Wales Shadow Economy Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth said:

“While we welcome today’s drop in unemployment, when we probe behind the headlines the figures reveal some worrying trends. Underemployment continues to rocket, with more than one in ten people working part-time when they want to be in full-time employment.

“Likewise we know that youth unemployment is significantly higher in Wales than any other UK nation, and that long-term youth unemployment has quadrupled under this Labour government. It’s essential that the Welsh Government acknowledges that youth unemployment is a real crisis that has spread like wild fire under its watch, and that it acts to tackle the problem.

“The problem that the Welsh Government has always struggled with is to create high-value jobs that both suit the needs of our people and add value to the economy. Plaid Cymru wants to deliver this by helping our businesses take on staff, investing in skills training, and making it easier for businesses to access funding and flourish in difficult economic circumstances.”
