2014 is a special year for sport in Cardiff. Not only is Cardiff celebrating its European Capital of Sport status, it is also playing host to the inaugural Cardiff Games.
The Cardiff Games is a multi-sport competition for Primary and Secondary Schools in Cardiff which seeks to inspire, motivate and encourage young sports people within Cardiff to participate in sport and take pride in representing their school. Teams entered in The Games earn points for attendance and their final position in the competition.
Cabinet Member for Community Development, Co-operatives and Social Enterprise, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said: “In one term alone the Cardiff Games have seen over 800 boys and girls take part in 13 sports from dance to wheelchair basketball. This level of participation shows what a great first year it’s been for the Cardiff Games, allowing many children who would not normally engage with sport the chance to play for their school. Its success is testament to the work that we have done with our partner organisations to deliver this opportunity.”
The spring term saw an undefeated Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf take the Key Stage 3 Girls Basketball competition. The girls collected their medals from London 2012 Team GB basketball star Steph Collins who came down to inspire the next generation of female basketball players.
Disability sport also took its place in the limelight when six teams from Mary Immaculate and Whitchurch High School took part in the first ever disability running basketball competition. At the Cardiff Games Para-sport competition four secondary schools competed in table tennis, wheelchair basketball and boccia with Cantonian High School picking up the overall winners trophy and earning 25 points to add to their league total.
With 5-a-side football and dance competitions also taking place the opportunities to earn points came thick and fast.
The end of term saw Cardiff High School sitting at the top of the table on 291 points with Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf nipping at their heels, only four points behind in second place. Third place is currently held by Whitchurch High School on 200 points.
There may only be one term left to go, but with competitions in baseball, golf and athletics still to come there are plenty of points to play for before one school takes the first ever Cardiff Games crown.
