Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has welcomed a major report published today which identifies ways to improve Wales’ resilience to coastal flooding and hopes its conclusions will help ensure Kinmel Bay is better protected from flooding in the future.
The Natural Resources Wales assessment was commissioned by the Minister for Natural Resources and Food, Alun Davies, following the coastal storms of this last winter which caused extensive damage to many Welsh coastal towns including Kinmel Bay.
The report concludes that the resilience of the defences to recover must be improved.
Darren said:
“I am extremely pleased that Natural Resources Wales have carried out this report and very much welcome its recommendations. The flooding which hit Kinmel Bay was devastating for all those affected and some residents are still piecing their lives back together. It is therefore vital that lessons are learnt from recent experiences and that action is taken to give residents the peace of mind that everything that’s possible is being done to prevent them ever having to go through such an ordeal again.
“Wales is particularly vulnerable to storms of this kind and climate change projections indicate that the risk will increase due to more extreme weather in the future, so it is crucial that we are better prepared to keep our communities safe.
“This report and its recommendations will hopefully help agencies, authorities and communities at risk to be even better prepared should it happen again.”
