Newport County face a further wait for another match after Saturday’s Blue Square South fixture at Basingstoke was postponed.
The cancellation means the Exiles have not played a competitive fixture since New Year’s Day.
The eagerly-anticipated FA Trophy second-round tie against York City has been twice postponed due to an unplayable surface at Syptty Park but the club are hopeful that the game will take place on Wednesday 20th January, 7:45pm kick-off.
The bad weather has created a back-log of fixtures for the Blue Square South leaders and they will now face four games in ten days. Following the York City cup tie, County will host St. Albans City on Saturday 23rd before a trip to Worcester two days later on Monday 25th January. The away fixture at Bromley completes the intense schedule.
It will provide a stern examination of the fitness of Dean Holdsworth’s men who will be looking to continue producing the results that has seen them develop a mammoth 14-point lead of the Blue Square South, still with a game in hand over nearest challengers Woking.
Their campaign was boosted this week by the signing of Chris Todd from Torquay United – initially on loan to the end of the season with a further season contracted to the Exiles.
Manager Dean Holdsworth was extremely pleased with the acquisition: “I am delighted that Chris has decided to join Newport County. We are gaining a league quality defender who in recent years has commanded transfer fees and lead his side at Wembley.”
Todd said it was County’s potential that attracted him to the principality: “I chose Newport County as I really think that the club are going places. It gives me a real opportunity to be part of something special.”
